Forever disfigured by Gypsie surgeons of the 17th century, Gwynplaine, an exiled nobleman's orphaned son, is abandoned as a child in the cold winter of England. While searching for shelter, he rescues a blind baby girl, Dea, from the frozen arms of her mother. Both are welcomed and raised by philosopher Ursus. Years later, Gwynplaine becomes a successful clown, and he and Dea travel throughout England performing for commoners. Gwynplaine and Dea are in love, but he refuses to marry her because of his appearance. Feeling unworthy of Dea's love, Gwynplaine must face his past and present circumstances to overcome his feelings of self-doubt and manipulation of the sadistic court jester Barkilphedro.
