The newly appointed sheriff, Pat Garrett, assists his old friend Doc Holliday in finding his stolen horse. They discover that Billy the Kid has possession of the horse but surprisingly, Billy and Doc become friends. Soon Doc's girl, Rio, falls in love with Billy, complicating the relationships between all four of them.
